In addition to its consultative role in community planning, the Civic Forum regularly invites guest speakers and receives requests from representatives of various organisations to give talks/presentations on a variety of topics. Recent topics have included: advancing equality; local development plan; building warrants and their effect on housing; public transport; and parking for the disabled.
The Forum also hears reports from the local community councillors and representatives of Communities of Interest on what is happening in their areas; latest developments and future plans.
The Forum has representatives serving on at least 16 local organisations including the Aberdeen Community Planning Partnership and its Thematic Groups; Community Safety; Fairer Scotland Fund Board; Local Licensing Forum; Alcohol and Drugs Partnership and Aberdeen Greenspace Board. Each of the representatives gives regular reports to the Forum, thus creating a wide network throughout the City helping to inform and influence community planning.
One recent presentation challenged voluntary representatives if they had committed to equality for all. The ‘Advancing Equality in the North East of Scotland’ Project is an exciting new project at Grampian Regional Equality Council (GREC) made possible through support from the Scottish Government Equality Unit.
The project is looking for “Equality Champions” from diverse communities who will be supported to:-
- motivate wider community involvement
- share relevant equality information
- highlight barriers and needs of diverse communities
- identify ways of addressing inequalities
- help work towards a more equal and fair society
The ‘Advancing Equality in the North East of Scotland’ project will make a real difference in gaining the involvement of diverse communities, community groups and forums in advancing equality of opportunity for all.
