Grampian Gathering 2024
Over 50 and on the approach to or contemplating retirement?
Sign up to attend the Grampian Gathering on Saturday 12th October 2024 at the Beach Ballroom.
-What the Grampian Gathering is about?
The intention behind the Gathering is to promote discussion and subsequent planning of a good retirement and help people be more aware of the community initiatives, groups and organisations across the region.
There will be various stalls and tables showcasing all the various groups and charities to promote and encourage people to join groups and to take up opportunities to volunteer.
Last year was the first Gathering we have held and was for City residents only, this year on the back of the successful Wellbeing Festival held over the month of May across Grampian, we have opened the gathering across the whole Grampian region so are anticipating a good attendance.
-What are the proposed topics for discussion?
We are planning the event around three themes:
- Retiring well
-
- how to plan for your best retirement
- being mindful that there are 4 phases of retirement, the 2nd phase is when there is a risk of depression due to a lack for purpose and meaning.
- Psychological impacts of retirement and how connecting to communities to give meaning and purpose can stave off this decline.
- Age Friendly Communities
-
- Age friendly communities work in Aberdeen underpinned by World Health Organisation
- Getting it right at the end, planning for death and dying.
- there will be packs given out to the delegates which have been developed by Age Scotland on all the things you need to know and plan for.
- we are hoping to have a solicitor speak on power of attorney guardianship – The speaker will talk us through what we need to be doing and getting in place
-Last year’s event
We had 180 people in attendance and the feedback was overwhelming positive and supportive of the continuation of the conference this year.
-Aims of the Grampian Gathering
Information from stall holders on how to engage with community-based interventions or support to set up a group.
Have speakers who can inspire and motivate people to remain fit, well, active and in charge of their own retirement.
Create a social movement of older people who are promoting and developing their own retirement community of social connections.
Workshop on getting right in the end where after a speaker on Power of Attorney, Wills and planning for death we can ignite the conversation on how to talk about death to our families and live our best retirement lives.
Engagement of over 50’s on projects in health and social care by giving feedback in lived experience forum or parliament.
After planning the aim is to move on and live a good life knowing we have done what we can in planning for the end.
